Firewood Questions Hints & Tips

How much firewood will I need in winter? 3 - 4 tonne

This is a common question, in the southern parts of Australia on average people use around 3 to 4 tonne for the year.

People using Firewood just on odd nights or as a weekend luxury might only use 1 to 2 tonne for the season.

The total amount needed comes down to how warm you like the house inside, and if you have the fire going day and night all week or just week ends.

If you expect to use the fire for the majority of your heating four plus nights a week. We recommend starting with 3 to 4 tonne. If you run out early you can always top up with more, if you have wood left over you now have a head start for next season.

How to dry Firewood? Can i dry my own Firewood? yes you can!

Air flow and direct sun is all takes to dry firewood, the more direct sun and air flow the better and faster wood dries.

  • All Firewood cut and split before December 1st in Australia & left in a sunny dry area, will be dry and ready to burn come March & April when needed in the colder areas.
  • If you want your Firewood to be absolutely premium, stack your firewood off the ground in racks or on pallets in full sun light with reasonable air flow before December each year.

Firewood naturally dries when split to size in all months of the year, the drying process is fast tracked over spring & summer with the hot weather and direct heat from the sun.

How to store Firewood Australia?

Below are some common ways people store Firewood which are fine.

  • Stack along a fence line
  • Leave in a pile in the yard or paddock
  • Stack in the shed or garage
  • Stack wood in racks or pallets off the ground
  • Leaving wood anywhere on the ground is fine as long as water runs ways from your wood

If your Firewood is stored outside this is fine as long as the wood receives some sunlight & air flow and water runs away from your wood pile.

Things to Avoid doing with your Firewood

  • Avoid stacking or leaving wood in damp dark or wet areas for long periods of time, doing this will gather moisture and make your Firewood start to rot.
  • Don't stack or leave Firewood where water pools and sits.

If you believe this has happened to your Firewood re stack in a nice sunny area with good air flow. Your Firewood will dry out and become usable again once under 25% moisture.
